Suvarnabhumi Airport Maps: Pickups, Departures, Parking and Transport
After an airport pickup, I put together four main-terminal floor plans for BKK, explaining arrivals, departures, parking, taxis, Grab, buses and the Airport Rail Link.
On October 13, I went to Suvarnabhumi Airport to pick someone up. It is a big airport, and it can be quite confusing.
Which floor should you wait on? Which exit will they come through? Once you meet, how do you get back to the car park? Where do you go for a taxi or the Airport Rail Link? Without checking first, it is easy to walk in circles.
So I put together four schematic floor plans for the main terminal, with explanations based on airport information and travellers' experiences online. They will be useful for my next visit, and I can share them with friends coming to Bangkok.
Check the airport first, then the floor
Bangkok has two airports that travellers commonly use:
- Suvarnabhumi Airport, airport code BKK.
- Don Mueang Airport, airport code DMK.
Before arranging a pickup, booking a car or planning a connection, check the airport code in the flight details. These are different airports. Seeing the word “Bangkok” is not enough.
Once you have confirmed BKK, remember these locations:
- F4 / Level 4: departures, check-in and checked baggage.
- F3 / Level 3: public-area shops and dining in the main terminal, plus connections to the car parks.
- F2 / Level 2: arrivals; this is the main floor for meeting arriving passengers.
- F1 / Level 1: public taxis, Grab and some bus pickup points.
- B1 / basement: the Airport Rail Link.
For a pickup, start with Level 2. For a departure, start with Level 4. To leave the airport, go to Level 1 or B1 according to your transport choice. Understanding that makes finding your way much easier.
The four plans explain the main terminal's floor functions and principal routes. They are simplified schematics, not official airport plans drawn to scale. Follow the signs on site for exact facility locations.
Level 2 arrivals: be specific about where to meet
I think this is the most useful plan for anyone picking someone up.
International arriving passengers normally go through immigration, collect their baggage and clear customs before entering the public arrivals hall. People meeting them wait in the public area; they cannot enter baggage claim to look for them. Official arrival procedure
So when the flight shows “landed,” there is no need to rush the person to come out. Landing, leaving the aircraft and reaching the public hall happen at different times.
There are two sets of labels to keep apart: A, B and C are arrivals exits; 1–10 are the terminal doors facing the road.
Domestic arrivals generally use Exit A, while international arrivals use B or C. Confirm the actual exit from the signs and the passenger's location. Arrival exits and meeting locations
“I'm at Exit B” and “I'm at Door 3” describe different places. Both people may think they have been clear and still fail to find each other.
My suggestion is to name the floor, door number and whether you are inside or outside, then send a photo.
For example, after agreeing to meet near Door 3:
I'm inside Door 3 on Level 2 of the main terminal. Contact me once you have collected your bags and come out. I'll send you a photo.
A recognisable shop or sign in the photo makes the location easier to identify.
If you are driving, I would park first and then wait inside the hall. Take a photo of the parking zone, floor and space so you can find the car again without another search.
Level 1 transport: choose your ride, then find its pickup point
This plan answers the next question: how do you leave the airport?
Public taxis are on Level 1, between Doors 4 and 7 at the inner curb. Take a queue ticket and follow the instructions to board. Besides the metered fare, airport surcharges and expressway tolls may apply. Confirm these when getting in. Official public taxi information
Grab's designated pickup point is at Level 1, Door 4, at the outer curb. Once there, check the pickup area shown in the app and follow the signs to the correct spot.
For buses, the S1 towards Khao San Road and Sanam Luang boards at Level 1, Door 7, inner curb. Some intercity coaches to places including Pattaya and Hua Hin board near Door 8 on Level 1. Official airport transport guide
Being on the same floor does not mean being at the same door, lane or waiting area. Decide which service you are taking before walking to its pickup point.
For other ride-hailing apps, check their current instructions and airport requirements rather than assuming they use Grab's location.
One useful tip from travellers online is to have mobile data ready. Outside the terminal, do not rely entirely on airport Wi-Fi: you need a connection to contact the driver, check the booking and confirm the number plate. CK Travels' airport pickup experience
If you are connecting through Don Mueang, look for the inter-airport shuttle separately. It boards at Level 2, Door 3, inner curb. The free service is for eligible connecting passengers, who need proof of onward travel and identification. It is different from the airport's internal shuttle. Level 3 shops and dining: waiting, eating and returning to the car
This plan shows the main terminal's public-area dining, shops and links to the car parks.
If you arrive early for a pickup, or want something to eat or a coffee after meeting, this floor is worth checking. Agree on the meeting place before taking a break, though. If one person is searching on Level 2 while the other has gone to a restaurant on Level 3, you will need to coordinate again.
These are public areas of the main terminal. Someone meeting a passenger cannot simply enter the shops and restaurants beyond security and outbound passport control. When looking up a restaurant, check both the floor and whether it is landside or airside.
Level 3 is not the only place to eat. Travellers often mention Magic Food Point, near Door 8 on Level 1. It serves simple meals including Thai rice dishes and noodles, and is one option for keeping food costs down. Check prices and payment arrangements on site. THAIest's airport food court guide
If you drove, note the car park connections on this plan. Use the parking photo you took and follow the walking-route and car park signs back to your vehicle.
With luggage, older relatives or children, find the lifts first. Avoiding repeated changes of direction is easier than doubling back halfway.
Level 4 departures: check the counter and boarding gate separately
Level 4 is the first floor to check when departing or dropping someone off.
Inside the hall, use the flight displays to confirm the airline, flight number and current check-in row, then check in and drop off your baggage.
There are several different identifiers here: numbered terminal doors, lettered check-in rows, and concourse or boarding-gate numbers.
They are not interchangeable. Reaching a terminal door does not mean you have found your check-in counter, and finishing check-in does not mean you have reached your gate.
If your boarding gate is S101–S128, follow the SAT-1 satellite terminal signs. International departures using SAT-1 complete check-in, security and outbound passport control in the main terminal, then take the airport's automated people mover, or APM, to SAT-1. Official SAT-1 departure guidance
Allow time for more than the journey to the airport: you also need time for formalities and reaching the gate.
Follow your airline's advice on when to arrive. Check-in, baggage acceptance and boarding have their own deadlines; departure time is not the last moment to reach the gate.
Beyond the four plans: B1 and SAT-1
The plans cover Levels 1–4 of the main terminal. The basement railway station and SAT-1 need a separate explanation.
The Airport Rail Link is on B1. To travel into Bangkok by rail, follow its signs down to the basement rather than looking in the Level 1 bus area. It runs to Phaya Thai, where you can change to the BTS. The Airport Rail Link and BTS are separate lines, so plan the transfer too. Airport Rail Link stations and connections
I would choose transport according to the number of people, the luggage and the hotel's location. Travelling alone with light luggage to a hotel near rail may make the Airport Rail Link worth comparing. With several people, more bags or a hotel far from a station, compare the total cost of taxis, ride-hailing and pre-booked transfers.
For a pickup, a flight arriving at SAT-1 does not mean you should go to the satellite terminal to find the passenger.
Arriving passengers take the APM from SAT-1 to the main terminal, then complete immigration, baggage collection and customs. Arrange the meeting in the main terminal's public arrivals hall. Official SAT-1 arrival guidance
What I would prepare before a pickup
- Confirm the airport code: BKK or DMK.
- Confirm the flight number, arrival date and actual flight status.
- Check times in Thailand's local time; Bangkok is one hour behind Beijing.
- Agree on the meeting floor, door and exact spot.
- Save the floor plans you need, and have mobile data and enough battery.
- If driving, record the parking zone, floor and space.
If you cannot find each other, agree that one person stays at a confirmed location while the other goes there. If both keep moving, you may keep missing each other.
This article began with one airport pickup. The airport is large and may feel complicated at first, but matching what you need to do with the right location makes it much easier.
Next time I come to pick someone up or catch a flight, I will open these plans first. If a friend is coming to Bangkok, I can send them the guide in advance.
The four plans are main-terminal schematics, not drawn to scale. Key navigation and transport information was checked on October 13, 2026. For counters, facilities and pickup arrangements, follow current airport displays, signs and staff instructions.
